Coffee, Wine, and Invisalign: Can You Still Enjoy Your Favorites?
June 10th, 2026Let’s be honest, Portland runs on coffee. Add in our incredible Oregon wine country, a thriving craft beer scene, and the occasional matcha latte trend, and there’s a lot to sip on around here. So when patients consider Invisalign, one of the most common questions we hear at Garfinkle Orthodontics is: “Can I still drink my coffee?”
The short answer is yes — but there are a few things you’ll want to know to keep your aligners (and your teeth) looking great throughout treatment.
Why Drinks Matter More With Aligners
When you’re wearing Invisalign, your aligners are basically a clear shell hugging your teeth for 20 to 22 hours a day. That means whatever you drink gets trapped against your teeth and inside the trays.
Two things can happen:
Your aligners can get stained, making them look yellow or cloudy
Sugars and acids get held against your teeth longer than usual, raising the risk of cavities and enamel wear
Neither one is the end of the world, but both are easy to avoid with a few small habits.
The Drinks Most Likely to Stain or Damage
Here are the usual suspects when it comes to staining or wear:
Coffee (hot or iced)
Red wine
Black or green tea
Dark sodas
Sports drinks and energy drinks
Berry smoothies and juices
Turmeric lattes (yes, really — that golden color is intense)
It’s not about avoiding these forever. It’s just about how you drink them while you’re in treatment.
The Golden Rule: Water Is Always Safe
Plain water is the only drink you can have while your aligners are in. That includes still or sparkling — though sparkling water is a little more acidic, so try not to sip it all day long.
For everything else, the rule is simple: aligners out, drink, rinse, aligners back in.
How to Enjoy Coffee Without the Mess
Coffee is the one most patients worry about giving up. Good news — you don’t have to. Here’s how to make it work:
Take your aligners out and store them in their case before your first sip
Drink your coffee within a reasonable window (not slowly sipping over three hours)
Rinse your mouth with water when you’re done
Brush if you can, or at least swish water before popping aligners back in
Avoid heavily sweetened coffee drinks when possible — sugar plus warm trapped saliva is not a great combo
If you’re a slow sipper who likes to nurse your coffee at your desk all morning, this is the biggest habit shift. Many of our patients switch to drinking their coffee in a more focused window so they can hit their 20-22 hours of aligner wear without trouble.
What About Wine and Cocktails?
A glass of Willamette Valley pinot? Totally doable. Just take your aligners out first. Red wine can stain aligners surprisingly fast, and the acidity isn’t great against teeth either.
A few quick tips:
Always remove aligners before drinking anything other than water
Stick to one focused happy hour rather than sipping all evening
Rinse with water before putting aligners back in
Skip drinks with lots of citrus or sugar when you can
What Happens If You Drink With Aligners In Anyway?
Real talk — life happens. You forget. You’re at a wedding. You don’t want to take your aligners out at the table. If it happens occasionally, your teeth will be fine. But making it a habit can lead to:
Yellowed, cloudy aligners that you’ll want to replace early
Cavities, especially along the gumline
Bad breath (warm drinks plus trapped bacteria is rough)
Enamel erosion over time

Caring for Your Aligners Day to Day
A quick aligner care routine goes a long way:
Rinse aligners with cool water every time you take them out
Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste — it’s too abrasive)
Soak them in a cleaner like Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture tablets a few times a week
Never use hot water — it can warp the plastic
Always store them in their case when they’re not in your mouth (not a napkin)
Is Invisalign Still Worth It If You’re a Coffee Lover?
For most of our adult patients, the answer is a clear yes. The small adjustments to your drinking habits are very doable, and the result is a straighter smile without anyone knowing you’re in treatment.
That said, Invisalign isn’t the only option, and it isn’t the right fit for everyone. If you’re still weighing your choices, our post on
