Common Braces Problems and How to Handle Them at Home

September 10th, 2026

If you’ve had braces for any length of time, you’ve probably had at least one “uh oh” moment. Maybe a bracket popped off while you were eating a bagel. Maybe a wire is jabbing your cheek. Maybe your rubber band snapped mid-conversation.

Good news: most braces problems aren’t emergencies, and a lot of them can be handled at home until your next appointment. At Garfinkle Orthodontics, we want every patient to feel confident dealing with the little bumps in the road. Here’s what to do when common issues come up.

When Something Feels Off, Don’t Panic

First things first: most braces problems are more annoying than serious. Your treatment isn’t going to be ruined by a loose bracket or a poking wire. The key is knowing what to do in the moment to stay comfortable and knowing when to give us a call.

Keep this article bookmarked. When something happens, you’ll know exactly what to do.

Problem 1: A Bracket Comes Loose

This is one of the most common calls we get. A bracket can come loose from eating something too crunchy, biting down wrong, or just wearing over time.

What to do:

  • Check to see if the bracket is still attached to the wire (it usually is)
  • If it’s loose but still on the wire, leave it alone and cover it with wax so it doesn’t rub
  • If it’s completely off, put it in a small container or bag and bring it to your next appointment
  • Call our office to let us know

Is it urgent? Usually not, but call us anyway so we can decide whether you need to come in sooner. Sometimes we can wait until your next scheduled appointment, sometimes we want to see you within a few days.

Problem 2: A Wire Is Poking Your Cheek

This happens most often at the back of your mouth, where the wire ends. As your teeth move, the wire can start sticking out and poking your cheek.

What to do:

  • First, try covering the poking end with a small ball of orthodontic wax
  • If wax isn’t holding, try gently pushing the wire flat with a clean pencil eraser
  • If it’s really bothering you, a pair of clean nail clippers can be used to snip the very tip of the wire (as a last resort)
  • Rinse with warm salt water to help any sore spot heal

Is it urgent? Not usually, but if it’s causing significant pain or you can’t get it under control, give us a call. We can trim it quickly in the office.

Problem 3: A Wire Has Slipped Out of Place

Sometimes the entire wire can shift so that it’s no longer sitting in a bracket properly. You might notice it’s sticking out on one side or crooked.

What to do:

  • Try to gently guide the wire back into the bracket with clean tweezers
  • If you can’t get it back in, cover any poking part with wax
  • Call our office so we can schedule a quick visit to fix it

Is it urgent? If it’s causing pain or you can’t get it comfortable, come in soon. Otherwise, we can handle it at your next appointment.

Problem 4: A Rubber Band Snaps

If you wear elastics (the rubber bands that stretch between your top and bottom teeth), they can snap occasionally. This is completely normal.

What to do:

  • Just replace it with a new one from your bag of elastics
  • If you’re running low, call us and we’ll send more or have you pick some up

Is it urgent? No. Just replace it and keep going.

Problem 5: You Ran Out of Wax

Wax is your best friend during braces treatment. If you run out and something is rubbing:

  • Sugarless gum can work as a temporary wax substitute in a pinch
  • Most drugstores sell orthodontic wax over the counter
  • Call our office and we can give you more at your next visit (or send some home)

Is it urgent? No, but keep some wax on hand at all times if you can.

Problem 6: A Bracket Feels Sharp

Sometimes a bracket can develop a rough edge or feel sharp against your cheek or tongue. This isn’t dangerous, but it is uncomfortable.

What to do:

  • Cover the sharp edge with a generous amount of wax
  • Use warm saltwater rinses to soothe any irritation
  • If it’s ongoing, mention it at your next appointment so we can smooth it out

Is it urgent? No. Just cover it with wax and let us know when you’re next in.

Problem 7: Your Teeth Are Really Sore After an Adjustment

Some soreness after an adjustment is completely normal. But sometimes it feels worse than usual.

What to do:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
  • Stick with soft foods for a day or two
  • Try cold drinks and cold foods
  • Rinse with warm salt water
  • Give it time (usually improves within 2-3 days)

Is it urgent? Not usually, but if pain is severe or lasts more than a week, give us a call.

Problem 8: Food Is Stuck and You Can’t Get It Out

Food can get wedged in places that seem impossible to reach. Especially popcorn kernels, seeds, and stringy things like chicken.

What to do:

  • Try flossing with a floss threader
  • Use an interdental brush (small brush that fits between brackets)
  • A water flosser is amazing for this
  • Rinse vigorously with water
  • If it won’t budge, we can help at your next visit

Is it urgent? No, but persistent stuck food can lead to gum irritation. Do your best to get it out.

Problem 9: You Lost Your Retainer

If you’re past the braces stage and lost your retainer, that’s a different kind of problem. Our post on what to do if you lose your retainer walks through the steps.

The short version: call us as soon as possible so your teeth don’t have time to shift.

Problem 10: A Bracket Is Rotating on Your Tooth

Occasionally a bracket can rotate or tilt slightly, especially if it came loose without you noticing.

What to do:

  • Try not to touch it or push it around
  • Cover with wax if it’s rubbing
  • Call us so we can schedule a quick visit to re-bond it

Is it urgent? Come in within a few days if you can. A rotated bracket isn’t guiding your tooth movement properly.

What Counts as a True Emergency?

Most braces “emergencies” are more like inconveniences. But there are a few situations where you should call us right away (or seek immediate care):

  • A sudden, severe blow to the mouth (during sports, a fall, etc.)
  • Significant swelling of the gums, face, or jaw
  • A wire that’s gone through your cheek or gum tissue and can’t be moved
  • Signs of infection (fever, pus, severe pain)
  • A broken tooth

For any of the above, call our office right away. If it’s outside office hours and you think it’s serious, head to urgent care or your ER.

The “Just In Case” Kit

Every braces patient should keep a small kit with them for on-the-go problems. We recommend:

  • Orthodontic wax (several packets)
  • A small mirror
  • Floss threaders or orthodontic flossers
  • A travel toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Interdental brushes
  • Extra rubber bands (if you wear them)
  • A small container for lost brackets
  • Nail clippers (clean, just for emergencies)

Keep this in your backpack, purse, or car. When something happens, you’ll be so glad you have it.

When in Doubt, Call Us

Here’s the golden rule: when something happens with your braces and you’re not sure what to do, just call us. We’d rather answer a quick question or bring you in for a five-minute fix than have you sit at home worrying or trying to fix something on your own.

Our office is used to these calls. There are no silly questions. If it’s after hours, leave a message and we’ll get back to you first thing in the morning. If something is truly urgent, we have ways to reach the doctors after hours too.

Prevention Goes a Long Way

While things will occasionally come up, you can prevent a lot of common braces problems by:

  • Avoiding foods that break brackets (hard candy, ice, popcorn, sticky things)
  • Cutting up harder foods into smaller pieces
  • Wearing a mouthguard during sports
  • Brushing and flossing well to avoid gum irritation
  • Attending all scheduled appointments
  • Not messing with your brackets or wires

It’s All Part of the Journey

A few little bumps along the way are just part of having braces. Almost every patient deals with at least one loose bracket, one poking wire, or one weirdly sore adjustment. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your treatment. It just means you’re a normal orthodontic patient.
