Growth-Friendly Treatments for Kids

First, know that an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 gives us a “lay of the land.” It helps us spot any developing issues early. Crucially, many children don’t need treatment at age 7 – often we just watch and schedule check-ups as more teeth come in. (Yes, sometimes the best plan is patience!)
When early intervention is recommended, it has a clear goal. It might involve:
- Palatal expanders: These widen a narrow upper jaw or correct a crossbite.
- Space maintainers: These hold space if a baby tooth is lost too early, so the adult tooth can come in properly.
- Habit appliances: These help stop things like thumb-sucking or tongue thrusting that can affect the bite.
What’s life like with these appliances? Expect your child to feel some pressure or soreness at first (expansion does push on teeth and bone). They might lisp or talk funny for a few days as they get used to it. Soft foods (soup, yogurt, smoothies) can make the first couple of days easier. And cleaning extra carefully around wires or bands is important—your orthodontist will show you exactly how to keep everything sparkly.
Here’s a quick “first days” checklist for parents:
- Pressure: Mild ache or “tight” feeling — usually improves quickly.
- Speech: Temporary lisp or new pronunciation; practice speaking or reading aloud to adapt.
- Eating: Stick to softer foods for a few days; avoid very hard or sticky treats.
- Cleaning: Take time to brush and floss near the appliance every day.
What parents often ask: “If we do this now, will they still need braces later?” Sometimes early treatment reduces complexity later. For example, making space now can avoid removing permanent teeth later. Other times, early appliances guide growth and we still do braces as a teen. Either way, parents leave our office knowing exactly what to expect next.
