Is Summer the Best Time to Start Braces or Invisalign?
July 28, 2026If you’ve been thinking about starting orthodontic treatment — for yourself or your kids — you’ve probably wondered whether timing matters. Is there a “best” time of year to begin? Does summer make more sense than starting mid-school year? What about adults with busy work schedules?
At Garfinkle Orthodontics, we help families plan around all kinds of schedules. Here’s what to think about when picking the right time to start.
Why Summer Is a Popular Choice
There’s a reason our schedule fills up quickly in June and July. Summer tends to be a great time to start braces or Invisalign, especially for kids and teens. Here’s why:
- No school schedule to work around for that first week of adjustment
- Easier to schedule the initial appointment without pulling kids out of class
- More time to figure out new brushing and flossing routines at home
- Less social pressure — kids can adjust to how they look and feel privately
- Time to figure out what to eat before school starts back up
- Sports and activity schedules are usually lighter
By the time school starts, most kids are past the sore, adjusting phase and back to normal. They walk into the first day of school with braces already feeling familiar.
When Summer Doesn’t Work — And That’s Okay
That said, summer isn’t the only good option, and we start patients any month of the year. Here are a few other times that make sense:
Winter or early spring: Some families like starting in December or January so they’re well into treatment by summer trips or graduations.
After a big event: Weddings, big performances, senior photos — some patients want those out of the way first.
Right after a check-in appointment: If your dentist just noticed shifting or a bite issue, waiting six months for summer might mean things get worse. Sometimes starting sooner is the smarter move.
Whenever life allows: For adults especially, the best time is often just whenever you can commit to being consistent with the routine.
For Kids and Teens: Planning Around School
If you’re thinking about summer for your child, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Book early. Our summer schedule fills up months in advance.
- Try to plan the “getting braces on” appointment for the first half of summer so your child has time to fully adjust.
- If your child is going to summer camp, factor that in — some camps are better than others for keeping up with orthodontic care.
- Don’t forget about first-week soft foods when planning family vacations.
- Talk to your teen about what to expect. Our post on tips to succeed with teen braces or aligners has great pointers.
If your child is younger and you’re wondering when they should even be evaluated, we recommend a first consultation around age 7. Most kids don’t need treatment that young — we just keep an eye on things. Our post on signs your child may need early orthodontic treatment breaks this down further.
For Adults: Timing Around Life, Not the Calendar
Adults have more flexibility with timing — you’re not tied to a school schedule. But other factors come into play:
Work presentations or client-facing roles: Some adults time their start around big work moments. Invisalign is popular for professionals who want treatment that’s less noticeable.
Wedding or big event photos: If you have a major event in the next 12 months, we can talk through whether to start before or after.
Insurance timing: If your dental insurance covers orthodontics, check when your benefits reset. Sometimes it makes sense to start before the end of the year to maximize coverage.
Life changes: New baby, new job, big move — sometimes it’s smart to wait for a stable stretch, and sometimes it’s better to just get started.
The good news is that treatment is flexible enough to fit into almost any adult life. Most appointments are quick — 20-30 minutes every 6-10 weeks. Invisalign appointments can be even shorter.
How Long From Consultation to Braces On?
If you come in for a consultation today, here’s a rough idea of the timeline:
- Consultation to decision: however long you need (there’s no pressure)
- Decision to treatment start: usually 2-4 weeks
- Braces on or first aligners in: takes one longer appointment (about an hour)
- First follow-up: 6-8 weeks later
So if you’re thinking about a summer start, coming in for a consultation in the spring (or even winter) is a smart move. It gives you time to plan without feeling rushed.
What About Timing Between Braces and Invisalign?
Both braces and Invisalign work year-round. The main scheduling differences:
- Braces have more frequent adjustments, but they’re quick.
- Invisalign has appointments every 8-10 weeks and shorter visits.
- Invisalign lets you go longer between appointments if you’re traveling.
- Braces don’t require you to remember anything — they’re just always working.
If you travel a lot or spend part of the year somewhere else, Invisalign is often the more flexible choice. If you’d rather not have to remember to wear something 22 hours a day, braces might be a better fit. Our post on braces vs. Invisalign — which is right for you walks through the comparison.
Planning Ahead for the First Week
Whenever you choose to start, the first week is the biggest adjustment period. It helps to plan for it:
- Stock up on soft foods ahead of time
- Have wax, a small mirror, and floss threaders on hand
- Plan easy, low-stress activities for the first few days
- Have ibuprofen or acetaminophen ready
- Give yourself grace — the first week is temporary
Most patients feel dramatically better by day 7-10, and by two weeks in, braces or aligners feel completely normal.
The Real Answer: The Best Time Is When You’re Ready
Here’s the honest truth. There’s no single “best” time to start orthodontic treatment. Summer works great for families with school-age kids. Winter works great for adults planning around end-of-year insurance. Anytime works great for someone who’s just been waiting for the right moment to prioritize their smile.
The most important thing isn’t the month — it’s the decision to actually start. Most patients tell us their only regret is not doing it sooner.
