Lost or Broken Your Retainer? Here's What to Do Next

May 27, 2026
It happens more often than you’d think. You wrap your retainer in a napkin at lunch, toss it in the wash with your jeans, or the dog mistakes it for a chew toy. Suddenly that little piece of plastic — the one keeping your beautiful new smile in place — is gone or in pieces. At Garfinkle Orthodontics, we get calls about lost and broken retainers all the time. The good news? It’s fixable. The not-so-good news? The longer you wait, the more your teeth can shift. Here’s what Portland patients should do next.

Why Retainers Matter More Than People Realize

After your braces come off or you finish your last set of Invisalign trays, your teeth aren’t quite “locked in” yet. The bone and tissue around them are still settling. Without a retainer, your teeth can start drifting back toward their old positions — sometimes in just a few days. We’ve covered this in more detail before, but the short version is this: skipping your retainer is one of the fastest ways to undo months (or years) of orthodontic work. For more on why retainers are so important, check out our post on the truth about retainers.

Step 1: Don’t Panic — But Don’t Wait Either

If you’ve lost or broken your retainer, the first thing to do is take a breath. Your teeth aren’t going to shift dramatically overnight. But you do want to act within a few days, not a few weeks. Here’s what to do right away:
  • Look in all the usual spots — backpacks, lunch bags, nightstand, car cupholders, bathroom counters
  • Check the trash if you think you may have wrapped it in a napkin (this is the #1 way retainers get lost)
  • If it’s broken, save all the pieces in a small container or bag
  • Call our office to schedule a quick visit

Step 2: Keep Your Teeth in Their Current Position

If you have an older retainer at home — even one that feels a little tight — try wearing that until you can get a replacement. A snug fit means it’s still working, just doing a bit of catch-up. If you don’t have a backup, give us a call. We may be able to fit you in quickly to take a scan and start on a replacement before any noticeable shifting happens.

Step 3: Come In for a Replacement

When you visit us, we’ll take a fresh digital scan of your teeth and order a new retainer. If your teeth have shifted slightly, the new retainer will match your current bite. If they’ve shifted a lot, we’ll talk through your options — which might include a short round of Invisalign to nudge things back. Most replacement retainers are ready within a couple of weeks. We’ll let you know what to expect based on your specific situation.

How to Avoid Losing a Retainer in the First Place

Some quick habits that save a lot of headaches (and money):
  • Always put your retainer in its case — never wrap it in a napkin or tissue
  • Keep the case in the same spot every time, like your nightstand or bathroom drawer
  • Don’t leave retainers near hot surfaces or in a hot car (they warp easily)
  • Keep them away from pets — dogs especially love the smell
  • Rinse and brush them daily with cool water and a soft toothbrush

A Note on “Just Getting a New One Online”

We’ve seen patients try mail-order retainer services after losing theirs, and we get it — they look convenient. But those companies don’t know your treatment history, your bite, or what your finished smile was supposed to look like. A retainer that doesn’t fit right can actually move your teeth in the wrong direction. If you’re going to invest in protecting your smile, it’s worth doing it with the team that knows your case.

When Should You Call Us?

Reach out to our office if:
  • You’ve lost your retainer and can’t find it after a thorough search
  • Your retainer is cracked, warped, or no longer fits comfortably
  • It hurts to put it in (a little tightness is normal, but pain isn’t)
  • You haven’t worn it in weeks or months and aren’t sure where you stand
We’d rather hear from you early than have you wait until your teeth have shifted significantly.
