Nervous About Seeing an Orthodontist? Here's What to Know
July 22, 2026If the idea of going to see an orthodontist makes you a little uneasy, you’re in good company. A lot of people — kids and adults alike — feel some nerves before their first visit. Maybe you had a rough experience at the dentist as a kid. Maybe you’re worried about what we’ll say. Maybe you just don’t love the unknown.
Whatever’s behind it, we get it. At Garfinkle Orthodontics, we spend a lot of time helping patients feel comfortable, and we’ve heard just about every worry there is. Here’s what to know if you’re feeling nervous — and what your first visit will actually be like.
You’re Not the Only One
Dental anxiety is one of the most common things we see, especially at first consultations. It’s not weakness, it’s not silly, and it’s not something to be embarrassed about. Some patients haven’t been to any kind of dental professional in years because of anxiety.
Here’s the good news: an orthodontic consultation is very different from most dental appointments. There’s no cleaning, no drilling, no needles. It’s mostly just a conversation and a look inside your mouth.
The Most Common Worries We Hear
Some of the top things patients tell us they were nervous about before coming in:
- “I don’t want to be judged for my teeth.”
- “I’m scared they’re going to tell me I need a bunch of expensive work.”
- “I don’t like people looking in my mouth.”
- “I had a bad experience with a dentist as a kid.”
- “I’m embarrassed I waited this long.”
- “I don’t want to feel pressured into treatment.”
If any of these sound like you, please know, we hear these exact things all the time, and none of them are a big deal to us. We’re not here to judge, upsell, or push you into anything. We’re here to give you information and let you decide what feels right.
What Actually Happens at a Consultation
A lot of the nerves come from not knowing what to expect. So let’s walk through it.
When you arrive: You’ll be greeted at the front desk, offered water or coffee, and given a chance to settle in. Our waiting area is comfortable with no fluorescent lights or beige clinical vibes.
In the chair: One of our team members will take some quick photos of your teeth and possibly a digital scan. Nothing hurts, nothing goes into your mouth beyond a small handheld camera or scanner. You can stop at any time if you need a break.
Meeting the doctor: Dr. Judah or Dr. Thrower will come over, introduce themselves, and take a look inside your mouth. This part usually takes just a few minutes.
The conversation: This is the biggest part of the visit. We’ll talk through what we saw, what your options are (if any), and answer every question you have. If you want to bring a list of questions with you, please do! We love that.
Wrapping up: You’ll leave with information, a rough timeline if treatment is recommended, and a general idea of cost. No decisions have to be made that day. Most patients take the info home and think it over.
The whole visit usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. If you’re new to all of this, our post on what to expect at your first orthodontist visit walks through more of the specifics.
Things That Help With Nerves
If you know you tend to get anxious at appointments, a few things can make a big difference:
- Bring someone with you. A partner, friend, or parent is welcome
- Tell us at the beginning that you’re nervous — we’ll go slower and check in more often
- Bring headphones and music if that helps you relax
- Eat something beforehand so you’re not lightheaded
- Skip the caffeine that morning if it makes anxiety worse
- Ask questions. The more you understand, the less scary things feel
- Take breaks whenever you need to
There is no “brave” way to do a consultation. Whatever helps you feel comfortable is what we want you to do.
For Parents Bringing Nervous Kids
If your child is the anxious one, here’s what tends to work best:
- Keep it low-key. Don’t build up the appointment as a big deal, but don’t dismiss their nerves either.
- Skip words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “needle” when talking about the visit, even to reassure them — kids hear the scary words first.
- Let them ask questions ahead of time.
- Bring a comfort item — a stuffed animal, a favorite toy, headphones.
- Reward them afterwards, whether the visit went perfectly or not.
- Let them know it’s just a look and a chat — nothing painful happens at a first visit.
Our whole team is great with kids, and we take our time. We’d rather spend an extra 20 minutes making a nervous kid comfortable than rush through and have them dread coming back.
What If You’ve Avoided Dental Care for Years?
This is more common than you might think. Some of our adult patients haven’t seen a dentist or orthodontist in a decade or more. If that’s you, we want you to know: we’re not going to give you a lecture, we’re not going to make you feel bad, and we’re not going to tell you it’s too late.
The best day to start taking care of your smile is today. Wherever you’re starting from, we’ll meet you there.
“What If They Tell Me I Need a Ton of Work?”
This is a big worry for a lot of adults. So here’s the honest truth: sometimes we recommend treatment, sometimes we recommend waiting, and sometimes we tell patients their smile is in great shape and they don’t need us at all.
If we do recommend treatment, we’ll walk you through:
- What the options look like (braces, Invisalign, or something else)
- A realistic timeline
- What it’ll cost, including payment options
- What happens if you decide to wait
You are never obligated to start treatment because you came in for a consultation. Take the info home, sleep on it, talk to your family — we’ll be here whenever you’re ready.
If cost is one of the things making you nervous, our post on how to choose the best orthodontist — care, cost, and confidence is a good resource.
Our Team Is Here to Help
Dr. Judah and Dr. Thrower have both spent their careers making orthodontic care feel less clinical and more human. Our team is trained to notice when patients are anxious and to slow down, explain more, and make sure you feel in control the whole time.
If you’re nervous, please just tell us when you book. We’ll make a note, and everyone who sees you that day will know to take extra care.
One Step at a Time
You don’t have to decide anything today. You don’t have to commit to anything at your consultation. You just have to make one phone call (or one online booking) to get the information you need to feel more in control.
That first step is the hardest one. Everything after it gets easier.
We’re located in SW Portland and serve families throughout Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Milwaukie, and the surrounding area. Your first consultation is always complimentary — bring your nerves, bring your questions, and we’ll take it from there.
