What to Expect at Your First Orthodontist Visit
April 7th, 2026Your first orthodontic visit to Garfinkle Orthodontics is an exciting step toward a new smile! Here’s what typically happens:
First, you’ll have a friendly consultation. We’ll ask about your smile goals and any concerns. Then your orthodontist does a detailed exam of your teeth, bite, and jaw.
Next, we’ll take digital X-rays and photos. This part is quick and painless (no long waits). The X-rays let us see all your teeth (even the ones below the gum) and how your jaw is aligned. Digital photos help us track changes in your smile over time. This tech is much faster than older methods—both for you and for planning.
You might also get a 3D scan or impressions of your teeth. A 3D scanner is like a small wand that creates a computer model of your teeth in minutes. If we use traditional impressions, it’s a quick putty impression and you only have to bite down for a short time. Both methods are standard ways to capture an exact mold of your teeth.
After all that, we talk through a plan. Your orthodontist will explain if any problems need fixing (like crowding or bite issues) and outline your treatment options (braces, aligners, or just monitoring). You’ll get to ask questions about how long treatment might take, how often visits will be, and what to expect next. We want you to leave fully informed.
At Garfinkle Orthodontics, the first visit also includes going over any financing or insurance questions so there are no surprises later. Think of this appointment as an introduction to your smile plan. Many patients find it reassuring—they leave feeling excited about their treatment plan and confident in the process.
