What Happens the Day Your Braces Come Off?

August 17, 2026

You’ve been counting down for months. Maybe years. The day your braces come off is one of the biggest milestones in your whole treatment, and honestly, one of the most exciting moments we get to share with our patients.

But if you’ve never been through it, you might be wondering what actually happens at that appointment. How long does it take? Does it hurt? Do you get to see your smile right away? Can you eat pizza that night?

At Garfinkle Orthodontics, we love debonding appointments (that’s the fancy word for taking braces off). Here’s exactly what to expect the day your braces come off.

The Short Answer

Getting your braces off takes about an hour, is completely painless, and ends with you seeing your finished smile for the very first time. Most patients walk out of the appointment grinning at every reflective surface they pass.

Here’s how the appointment breaks down step by step.

Step 1: One Last Look

When you first sit in the chair, we’ll take a quick look to make sure everything is exactly where we want it. This is our final chance to confirm your bite and alignment are perfect before removing the hardware.

Occasionally we’ll spot one small thing that needs an extra week or two of tweaking. If that happens, we’d rather catch it now than have you finish before your smile is truly done. Most of the time, though, this step takes just a minute.

Step 2: Removing the Brackets

This is the main event. Using a special tool, we gently squeeze each bracket, which releases it from your tooth. It doesn’t hurt at all. Most patients describe it as feeling like a firm pinch or a slight pressure, and then it’s off.

We work through each bracket one by one. The whole removal process usually takes about 10-15 minutes. If you’re curious, we can save a bracket or two for you as a keepsake.

Step 3: Cleaning Off the Adhesive

When your brackets were first placed, a special dental adhesive glued them to your teeth. That adhesive doesn’t come off with the brackets, so it needs to be gently polished away.

We use a small polishing tool to remove any remaining glue and smooth out your enamel. This part takes a bit longer than the bracket removal, usually around 20-30 minutes. It doesn’t hurt, but you’ll feel some vibration and might get a little tired of holding your mouth open. Water breaks are totally allowed.

By the end of this step, your teeth are completely clean, smooth, and free of any hardware.

Step 4: The First Look

This is the moment. We’ll hand you a mirror and let you see your finished smile for the very first time.

Fair warning: a lot of patients get emotional here. Happy tears, giant grins, “I can’t believe that’s me” moments. It’s one of our favorite parts of the job. Take your time. Look from every angle. Run your tongue across your teeth for that new smooth feeling.

We usually take a set of “after” photos at this appointment so you can compare them to your “before” photos. Together they tell the story of your whole transformation.

Step 5: Impressions or a Scan for Your Retainer

Before you leave, we’ll take a digital scan (or sometimes an impression) of your teeth to create your retainer. Your retainer is custom made to fit your exact new smile, and it’s the tool that keeps everything in place long-term.

Your retainer typically takes about a week to be ready. In the meantime, we might give you a temporary retainer to wear so nothing shifts before your permanent one is ready.

Step 6: The Retainer Talk

Before you head out, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about your retainer:

  • How often to wear it (usually most of the day for the first several months, then nights only after that)
  • How to clean it
  • Where to store it
  • What to do if you lose it
  • Why wearing it matters more than you might think

We know retainer wear can feel like a letdown after finishing braces, but this is genuinely the most important part of protecting all the work you just did. Our post on the truth about retainers breaks down why it matters so much.

Common Questions About the Day

Does removing braces hurt? No. Most patients say it feels weird more than anything. Some report their teeth feel a little sensitive for a day or two afterward, but nothing that needs pain relief.

Will my teeth look yellow? Sometimes. If you had brackets on for a long time, the exposed parts of your teeth may have picked up small stains from food and drinks. This is easily addressed with a professional cleaning at your regular dentist or over-the-counter whitening after your teeth settle. We’ll walk you through your options.

Can I eat whatever I want right away? Yes! No more braces-friendly food list. Popcorn, apples, corn on the cob, all fair game. Your teeth might feel a bit sensitive for a day or two, so don’t jump straight into the hardest foods, but you’re basically free.

How long will my teeth feel smooth and weird? About a week. After years of feeling brackets against your tongue, having smooth teeth again takes a little getting used to. Most patients say they can’t stop running their tongue across their teeth for days after.

Will I need a professional cleaning? Yes. We recommend seeing your regular dentist within a few weeks of getting your braces off for a full cleaning. They’ll get any lingering plaque and help your teeth look their best.

What Your Smile Will Look Like

Every patient’s finished smile is a little different, but a few things are common:

  • Your teeth will look straighter, obviously, but also more even and balanced overall
  • Your bite will feel different (better) when you chew
  • Your smile might look wider or fuller than it did before
  • Small details you weren’t expecting will surprise you (in a good way)
  • You’ll probably want to take a lot of selfies

For adult patients especially, we hear a lot of “I forgot what my smile could look like.” If you started treatment feeling self-conscious, this is the moment that changes.

The First Few Days After

Once you head home, here are a few things to keep in mind for the first few days:

  • Wear your temporary retainer as directed (if we gave you one)
  • Your teeth may feel a little sensitive to cold for a day or two
  • Don’t test durability by biting into something rock-hard right away
  • Take lots of “after” photos while you’re excited
  • Enjoy every food you couldn’t eat with braces on

The Retainer Phase

We know we keep bringing this up, but it’s really the most important part of what comes next. For the first several months, you’ll wear your retainer most of the day. After that, you’ll switch to nighttime wear only. Some form of nighttime retainer wear is typically recommended long-term to keep your smile in place.

Teeth naturally shift throughout your life, with or without previous braces. A retainer at night is the easiest way to keep the smile you just spent so much time earning.

For more on what to do if a retainer gets lost or broken, our post on what to expect at your first orthodontist visit is a good starting point for anyone new to the process.

For Parents: What to Expect

If your child is getting their braces off, here are a few things that help:

  • Bring your phone to take a photo of their reaction
  • Let them pick their next meal (they’ve earned it)
  • Reinforce the importance of retainer wear early and often
  • Consider a small celebration (dinner out, ice cream, whatever fits your family)
  • Save any brackets we give them as keepsakes

Most kids and teens are so excited that the retainer talk barely registers. That’s okay. We’ll reinforce it, but a little parental follow-up in those first few weeks makes a big difference.

One of Our Favorite Days

We do a lot of things at Garfinkle Orthodontics, but debonding day is honestly one of the best parts of the job. Getting to see a patient’s face when they look in the mirror for the first time never gets old. Whether it’s a shy teen who suddenly can’t stop smiling, or an adult who says “I’ve waited my whole life for this,” these moments are why we do what we do.

If you’re still in treatment and this day feels far away, hang in there. Every appointment, every rubber band, every soft-food day is getting you closer. And when you finally get here, it’s going to be so worth it.
